Catching The Media Whale

Media collaboration between News Ltd and Greenpeace

When Japan announced it would resume so called scientific whaling, Greenpeace faced a pivotal moment in its long running campaign to protect whales. The challenge was clear: transform a remote confrontation in the Southern Ocean into a national story in Australia and then propel it onto the world stage. As Communications Manager for Greenpeace Australia Pacific, Dan designed the media strategy that made this possible. Footage and photos were transmitted directly from the Antarctic to Sydney, then distributed globally. A crucial decision—to grant News Limited an eight hour exclusive window and facilitate interviews with Australians on board—ensured deep editorial investment and front page prominence. The approach worked so effectively that when Rupert Murdoch visited his Australian headquarters, he reportedly held up the Daily Telegraph’s front page featuring the campaign as an example of the bold coverage he wanted to see. Today Dan helps clients with media-political strategies that shape debates.
